FCC Reportedly Moves Toward Vote to Eliminate the 39% National TV-Station Ownership Cap

The Hollywood Reporter reports that the FCC is moving toward a vote on ending the national broadcast-station ownership cap, a major deregulatory step that could let station groups such as Nexstar and Sinclair expand their national reach. The current rule generally limits a commercial television owner’s aggregate reach to 39% of U.S. television households. The FCC reopened the long-running proceeding’s record in 2025 to consider retaining, modifying or eliminating the cap and the related UHF discount.
